EK ONG KAR, SAT KARTAR, SAT KARTAR, GUR BAR AKAL

We will be working with and chanting the mantra written above.

The first master of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak travelled a lot teaching.  In this one place, he was reciting a mantra which came from his composition, Japji when the local Muslim Emperor heard him.  Angered, and thinking that Nanak was some Pagan peasant, he sent his son to kill Nanak.  The boy tried throwing rocks at Nanak’s head, but found that the rocks wouldn’t even leave his hands.  Nanak was reciting this mantra, Ek Ong Kar, Sat Kartar, Sat Kartar, Gur Bar Akal.  Nanak then taught the child that there’s one creative consciousness going through all things a.k.a, One God.

Sikh soldiers going into battle under the command of the tenth master, Guru Gobind Singh also used to chant this mantra and although outnumbered, they would come through the battle miraculously unscathed.

One translation of the mantra is:  By the grace of the infinite, the universal consciousness has become my all pervading protector.
